How to get those luscious lips

Busy fussing over your skin? Well, have you realised that lips require as much or maybe even more attention?

1. If protecting your skin is a priority, then it is time you paid attention to your lips as well. Lips do not have oil or sweat glands, unlike skin. This makes lips most vulnerable to sunlight.

2. The UVA and UVB rays are harmful to the lips. UV rays penetrate deeply and dmage the skin's lower layers, leading to skin cancer and are strongest between noon and 4p.m. UVB rays cause damage to the skin's outer layer, causing sunburn and skin cancer and are strongest between 10 a.m and 3 p.m. Consequently, the delicate skin on your lips suffers terribly when exposed to direct sunlight. A good product that absorbs ultraviolet (UV) radaiation before it damages the skin should be used to protect lips.

3. Chances of skin cancer are high due to sunlight exposure. The impactaccumulates over the years, and lips become more vulnerable to cancer. This is because lips are exposed much more as opposed to other parts of the body that can be more easily covered with clothing. Also, lips have a minimal amount of melanin - a pigment that protects skin from harmful rays.

4. Adequate lip balm application and the need for minimising exposure between 10 a.m to 4 p.m is recommended. The best best protection is limiting your time in the sun and using products that have cooling agents and moisturisers as well as a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor). the higher the SPF number, the more protection you get.

5. SPF helps you find out how long you can stay in the sun without getting sunburned. SPF number is multiplied by the amount of time it takes to burn, which varies from person to person. For instance, if it takes 10 minutes for someone to get sunburned and they apply a lip balm that has SPF 6, then they can stay in the sun for 60 minutes, without getting seriously sunburned.

Children too should be taught to practice safe skin habbits since they have extremely delicate skin and require special skin care. So go ahead, get your lips all supple!
