Tattoo Healing and Aftercare Tips
A tattoo is one of the most dynamic symbols of self expression
ever created and it ís important to rely on the expert guidance
for the proper aftercare of your life-long treasure. Once you get
yourself tattooed, your skin demands some extra care for that particular
portion for a few days. Professional tattooists working with local,
state, and national health authorities have prepared the following
advice.
BANDAGE REMOVAL - The just finished tattoo is
usually bandaged either using a guage pad and a masking tape or
by applying antiboitic ointment and then covering with a plastic
wrap. We suggest you to remove the bandage after 2-12hrs of its
application. To heal properly, a wound needs to breathe.
Never attempt to rebandage your tattoo once it is removed. Make
sure you remove the bandage with clean hands.
AVOID WETTING - A fresh tattoo on your skin is
like an open wound, exposure to water for a prolonged time may lead
to infection. Wetting of the tattoo during the healing period may
also sometimes lead to dripping of the ink making your tatto look
fader. Restrict bathing to ----atmost 10 minutes---- if possible.
Also avoid swimming, hot tubs and saunas etc. for atleast two weeks.
DO NOT SCRATCH - You may encounter itching on
your new tattoo during the healing period. Itching is a normal phenomenon
on the tattooed area but remember not to pick at your scabs or scratch
the tattoo. Scratcing may pull off the underlying layer of ink giving
rise to a blank spot in the midst of the design and hence spoiling
the artwork.
You may relieve the itching sensation by applying any hypoallergic
moisturiser or by spraying alcohol on it or by simply slapping it.
CLEANSING - Promising cleaniness to your fresh
tattoo is a must to avoid any kind of infection. With a clean hand
wash your tattoo using a mild antibacterial soap and warm water.
Use a clean soft cloth to pat the tattoo to make it dry or let it
dry in air. Repeat the cleaning process 4-5 times a day.
AVOID DRYING - Cleansing should be followed by
the application of an ointment for the first three days and by the
application of a fragrance free cream for the following days. The
primary aim is to keep the tattoo moist so as to prevent it from
---scabbing---. Applying right amount of cream or lotion is important
as excess of it may lead to the suffocation of the wound.
Ointment or cream should be applied whenever you feel dryness or
stiffness around the tattoo. Using them 4-5 times a day is recommended.
SAY NO TO SUN - Avoid exposure to sunlight when
the healing process is on. A sunburn on your tattoo may lead to
a lot of problems and cause your tattoo to fade away. After your
tattoo is completely healed, applying a sun block is essential to
keep the artwork bright and beautiful. Do not apply a sun block
during the healing period.
By following these few simple procedures, you are sure to get great
results from your new art work. However, it's important that you
consult your own tattoo artist for any special instructions related
to the aftercare of your specific tattoo.
