Things that can damage your eyes
1. UV rays can burn the cornea and damage internal components of the eye like the lens and the retina. This increases the risk of cataract and other eye disorders. So avoid looking at the sun directly at any point of the day.
2. The chemicals in cigarettes can harm the most sensitive part of the retina, called the macula. Your vision can be irreversibly damaged when cells of the macula die or tiny blood vessels burst through it. So the next time you light up, think twice...
3. Intensely bright lights such as that of a welding machine - can overload and damage the sensitive light receptor cells in the retina.
4. High blood sugar, left untreated, can damage the blood vessels in the back of the eye· High blood pressure causes hypertensive retinopathy, which can damage the eye's blood vessels.
5. Constantly looking into the computer can lead to Computer Vision Syndrome or CVS, an eye malady that can cause blurred vision, headache, nausea... take small breaks between and always keep the computer screen 4 - 5 inches below the eye level- so that you are looking down at the screen.
6. Sometimes, rough debris caught between the lids and the eye can cause damage to the cornea because of it's constant abrasive action. So, never rub away an eye irritation due to external debris. Be gentle and wash it away with water.
